The Chinese Imaging Genetics (CHIMGEN) study Introduction


The Chinese Imaging Genetics (CHIMGEN) study establishes currently the largest available neuroimaging genetics cohort of Chinese population and aims to identify genetic and environmental factors and their interactions that are associated with neuroimaging and behavioral phenotypes. The CHIMGEN study has prospectively collected genomic, neuroimaging, environmental and behavioral data from more than 7,000 healthy Chinese Han participants aged between 18 and 30 years. As the pioneer of currently available large-sample neuroimaging genetics cohort of non-Caucasian population, the CHIMGEN study could provide new insight of ethnic differences in associations between genetic variants and neuroimaging phenotypes by comparing with cohorts of Caucasian population. The CHIMGEN study has collected hundreds of quantitative natural and social environmental measures derived from satellite images and national survey databases based on the locations of each participant from birth to present. Notably, most participants have experienced dramatic changes in natural and socioeconomic environments along with the rapid development of China, which may facilitate the discovery of new environmental factors associated with the human brain. With the lifespan environmental measurements of participants, the CHIMGEN study will be able to answer what, when and how a certain environmental exposure affects the human brain phenotypes.


The Chinese Imaging Genetics (CHIMGEN) Study


The CHIMGEN study is launched in 2015 and is led by Prof. Chunshui Yu at Tianjin Medical University General Hospital (TMUGH). The data were collected in 30 research centers located in 21 cities in the mainland of China. This study is supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Ministry of Science and Technology of the People´s Republic of China, and local hospitals, universities and research institutes. The CHIMGEN data will be open to bona fide researchers anywhere in the world for scientific purposes.
